AWS Solutions Architect – Cloud Architecture and Modernisation Specialist

IBM Australia is seeking an AWS Solutions Architect responsible for designing, governing and delivering scalable, secure and resilient solutions across enterprise AWS environments. This role drives cloud‑native design, migration and modernisation initiatives while ensuring seamless interoperability across hybrid cloud ecosystems, enterprise platforms and critical business systems.

The role operates at both strategic and technical levels, shaping cloud operating models and guiding complex transformational programs across Australia’s most significant public and private sector organisations.

Your role and responsibilities

Your Role and Responsibilities

As an AWS Solutions Architect, you will design end‑to‑end cloud architectures for major digital and transformation initiatives while advising clients on best‑practice modernisation of complex workloads, legacy platforms and mission‑critical systems. The role includes contributing directly to hands‑on technical delivery while also providing technical leadership to engineering and delivery teams to ensure high‑quality implementation outcomes.

You will:

Enterprise Strategy and Architecture

• Define and maintain enterprise AWS architecture roadmaps.

• Design target‑state architectures leveraging core AWS services.

• Establish AWS Well‑Architected Framework‑aligned patterns and guardrails.

• Define cloud‑native reference architectures across compute, networking, storage and security.

AWS Cloud Architecture

• Lead AWS‑centric and hybrid cloud architecture strategies.

• Design solutions using services such as EC2, Lambda, ECS/EKS, RDS, DynamoDB, API Gateway and S3.

• Architect secure and scalable VPC, networking and identity patterns.

• Develop cloud landing zones and multi‑account strategies.

• Enable robust data integration, migration and synchronisation patterns.

Migration and Modernisation Leadership

• Lead large‑scale AWS migration and modernisation programs.

• Define migration and modernisation pathways including re‑host, re‑platform, re‑architect and container migration approaches.

• Participate in solution build, testing, cutover and optimisation activities.

• Establish DevSecOps, automation and CI/CD best practices.

• Drive adoption of cloud‑native application and infrastructure approaches.

Technical Delivery Leadership

• Provide technical direction and leadership across engineering and delivery teams.

• Contribute to solution build activities, ensuring alignment with agreed architectures and design standards.

• Participate in technical reviews, troubleshooting, design workshops and solution validation.

• Ensure solutions meet required performance, reliability, security and operational expectations.

• Support project and program managers in identifying and mitigating technical risks.

Stakeholder and Cross‑Functional Leadership

• Partner with business, engineering, cybersecurity and operations teams.

• Translate business capability needs into AWS architecture roadmaps.

• Mentor engineers and cloud technical leads.

• Act as a trusted advisor for technical and executive stakeholders.

Governance and Standards

• Define cloud governance, standards and reusable patterns for AWS environments.

• Support architecture review boards and solution assurance activities.

• Ensure compliance with regulatory, security and industry frameworks.

• Embed monitoring, observability and resiliency standards into solutions.

Required Skills and Experience

Professional Experience

• 8–10+ years in enterprise IT.

• 5+ years designing and delivering AWS solutions.

• Experience leading and contributing to technical delivery within migration or transformation programs.

• Experience working in complex or highly regulated environments.

• Australian citizen with the ability to obtain a security clearance.

AWS and Cloud Platforms

• Expertise across AWS compute, containers, databases, integration and security services.

• Experience designing VPC, hybrid connectivity and multi‑account architectures.

• Proficiency with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation or CDK.

Networking and Security

• Hybrid connectivity design (Direct Connect, VPN).

• Zero trust architecture principles.

• IAM, identity federation and modern authentication patterns.

Architecture and Engineering Practices

• CI/CD pipelines, GitOps and DevSecOps practices.

• Containers and Kubernetes (EKS).

• Observability tooling and distributed tracing.

• Cloud cost optimisation and FinOps awareness.

Other Requirements:

• Australian citizen and eligible to work on secure projects.

• Willing to travel mostly interstate as/when required.
