The TBM Standards & Practice Development Specialist is a subject matter expert who drives the creation of standards, best practices, and training content for the TBM Council. This role is ideal for someone who has implemented and operated a TBM practice with dual skills in technology and finance. Finance skills would include FP&A, cost accounting, budgeting, forecasting, or technology finance.
Individuals in this role will rely on their TBM and finance experience to collaborate with the Council content team, TBM communities, and practicing companies to develop standards, use cases, modeling guides, best practices, and practitioner resources across the TBM Framework. Key topics will include cost transparency, investment planning, forecasting, consumption and operations data, labor financials, vendor & contract management, program/project costing, and cloud financials. The individual in this role will also lead the development of training and certification content that enables TBM adoption and practitioner success.
The ideal candidate should be deeply passionate and motivated by TBM practice development, content creation, writing practitioner guidance, and stewardship of industry standards.
● Leverage TBM and finance expertise and to guide development of TBM standards, use-cases, and best practices working closely in collaboration with TBM members,Communities, and companies using TBM.
● Author TBM technical practice guides, instructional documents, use-case adoption playbooks, and reference materials across the TBM body of practice (e.g., planning & forecasting, labor financials, contract data, AI cost modeling, cloud cost management).
● Create diagrams, workflows, examples, and visualizations to convey TBM concepts.
● Advise on development of quantitative surveys and research analysis
● Support the creation of educational and certification content working closely with TBM Education team.
● Lead select TBM Communities and engage with practitioners and contributors through interviews, working groups, workshops, and practitioner feedback sessions.
● Participate in select TBM Council events, present breakouts, conduct roundtables, and guide discussions both remote and in-person (5–10% travel).
● Develop a presence on social media, primarily LinkedIn, to promote research and engage stakeholders on TBM.
● Maintain awareness of trends in technology finance, cloud economics, AI cost structures, and digital operating models—and integrate them into Council standards.
● Provide program and project management support and content governance for the TBM Standards, Research, & Education team (estimated 20% or less of responsibilities)
● 5+ years experience supporting a TBM practice
● 5+ years ITFM and/or FP&A experience (budget and forecasting, performance analysis, planning, reporting, scenario modeling)
● Proven knowledge of TBM and IT Financial Management and ability to explain how financial data and processes—budgeting, forecasting, allocations, variance analysis, cost recovery, etc —integrate into and add value to a TBM practice.
● Proven experience authoring guides, documentation, instructional material, or training content.
● Excellent verbal and written communication, receptive listening skills, and ability to present to different audiences (Executives, Sales, Customer Success, etc.).
● Willing commitment to complete new TBM Practitioner Certification within first 3-months of hire
● Excellent ability to translate complex TBM, technology, and financial topics into clear, structured content for practitioners.
● Experience advising technology or business leaders on financial decision-making, investment cases, or performance management
● Understanding of GL structures, CoA design, cost centers, labor models, vendor/contract financials, cloud billing data, and project/program financials.
● Highly organized and detail-oriented with ability to both create a detailed program plan and then execute against that plan based on agreed to success metrics.
● Experience with at least one TBM/ITFM platform (Apptio, Nicus, ServiceWare, MagicOrange, etc.).
● Executive presence and ability to engage up and down the organization with confidence and poise.
● Experience building and achieving consensus around technical architectures, frameworks, or standards.
● TBM Certified Technology Business Management (CTBME) certification
● Relevant finance credentials (FPAC, FMVA, CIMA, CFA, CMA, etc)
● Basic knowledge of TBM-adjacent industry standards, frameworks, and methodologies (ex FinOps, ITFM Agile, SAFe, IT4IT, ITIL, ITSM, ITAM).

The compensation range and benefits for this position are based on a full-time schedule for a full calendar year. The salary will vary depending on your job-related skills, experience and location. Pay increment and frequency of pay will be in accordance with employment classification and applicable laws. For part time roles, your compensation and benefits will be adjusted to reflect your hours. Benefits may be pro-rated for those who start working during the calendar year.
