Introduction

The IBM mainframe (Z Systems) is responsible for most credit card transactions and is used by the many of the top insurers, banks, retailers, and airlines. IBM z/VM® is an operating system with highly secure and scalable hypervisor and virtualization technology designed to run Linux®, z/OS®, z/VSE® and z/TPF virtual machines as well as Red Hat® OpenShift® on IBM zSystems™ and IBM LinuxONE servers. z/VM provides a highly secure and scalable environment for efficiently running critical Linux applications, with support for more Linux virtual servers than any other platform in a single footprint.
The z/VM team is a worldwide team, primarily located in Poughkeepsie, NY with expansion plans in Bangalore, India. All phases of the software life cycle are performed within this team, including the design, development, test, performance, as well as supporting the product in the field with customers. Agile methodologies are used throughout the life cycle.
We are looking for qualified software engineer candidates to be part of our IBM Z Systems team, to help us take z/VM virtualization to the next level on the mainframe.

Your role and responsibilities

We are seeking a mid-level Networking/TCP/IP Developer to join our z/VM team. In this role, you will design, develop, debug, and enhance networking components within the z/VM environment, with a strong focus on TCP/IP, SSL, and network services reliability and performance. Prior experience with IBM Z or z/VM is not mandatory, but candidates should have a solid foundation in networking concepts, operating systems, and low-level debugging, along with the ability to ramp up quickly on new platforms and technologies.

You will work closely with QA, support, and system test teams to deliver robust, secure, and high-performing enterprise networking solutions.

Responsibilities
• Design, develop, and maintain TCP/IP and networking-related components in the z/VM environment.
• Debug and resolve customer- and developer-reported networking issues across development and production systems.
• Analyze network traces, logs, dumps, and packet captures to identify defects and performance bottlenecks.
• Work on SSL/TLS integration and secure communication between z/VM and guest operating systems.
• Collaborate with QA and system test teams to ensure adequate test coverage and validate fixes.
• Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and drive long-term fixes to prevent recurrence.
• Document design changes, technical findings, and known issues for internal and customer-facing teams.
• Contribute to improving network performance, scalability, and reliability of enterprise workloads.
• Assist during critical customer situations and outages to help restore services quickly.
• Develop or enhance diagnostic, tracing, and automation tools to improve development and troubleshooting efficiency.

This role requires strong problem-solving skills, a deep interest in networking internals, and a commitment to building reliable enterprise-grade software. If you enjoy working close to the system, debugging complex networking problems, and making things work at scale, we’d love to hear from you.
