Your role and responsibilities

Role: Database Administrator (PostgreSQL / MySQL / MSSQL) – L2

Experience: Minimum 4+ years of experience on PostgreSQL along with either MYSQL or MSSQL can be considered for this position.

Key Responsibilities

Database Administration

• Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MS SQL Server databases.
• Manage database objects, schema design, storage, users, roles, and security policies.
• Troubleshoot complex database performance and availability issues.

Performance Monitoring & Optimization

• Monitor databases using native tools and third-party platforms.
• Perform advanced tuning of queries, execution plans, memory usage, Index optimization, partitioning strategies and statistics maintenance.
• Memory, cache, and connection tuning (shared_buffers, innodb_buffer_pool_size, MAXDOP, TempDB optimization).
• Resolve blocking, deadlocks, lock waits, replication lag, and slow query issues.
• Query tuning using EXPLAIN / EXPLAIN ANALYZE (Postgres), EXPLAIN FORMAT=JSON (MySQL), Query Store (MSSQL)

Backup, Recovery & High Availability

• Implement and manage HA/DR solutions:
  • PostgreSQL: Streaming/Logical Replication, Patroni, pgBackRest
  • MySQL: Replication (async/semi-sync), Group Replication, InnoDB Cluster, Percona XtraDB Cluster (PXC) / Galera.
  • MS SQL: AlwaysOn AG, Log Shipping, Mirroring, Clustering (WSFC) and Replication (Transactional/Snapshot/Merge).
• Perform backup strategy design, restore tests, and DR drills.

o pg_basebackup, PITR, pgBackRest, barman (Postgres)

o mysqldump, Percona XtraBackup, MySQL Enterprise Backup.

o SQL Server Full/Diff/Log backups, VSS, Recovery Advisor.

o Disaster Recovery planning and RTO/RPO adherence.

Security & Compliance

• Implement encryption (TDE, SSL/TLS), auditing, and access controls.
• Ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards (SOX, PCI-DSS, GDPR).
• Perform vulnerability remediation and patch management.

Maintenance & Automation

• Automate routine tasks using Shell/PowerShell/Python scripts.
• Perform routine maintenance: vacuum, reindexing, statistics updates, integrity checks.
• Create runbooks, SOPs, and documentation.

Collaboration & Support

• Provide L2 support for incidents, change requests, and planned maintenance.
• Work with development, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to ensure database reliability.
• Participate in on-call rotation for 24×7 support.

Migration & Cloud

• Database migration using pg_dump/restore, logical replication, DMS.
• Migrate workloads to AWS RDS/Aurora, Azure SQL, Google Cloud SQL.
• Experience in cross-platform migrations (MySQL ↔ PostgreSQL, SQL Server → PostgreSQL, etc.)

3. Required Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

• Hands-on experience in PostgreSQL (On prem, Native and RDS), MySQL, and MS SQL Server Database administration.
• Strong knowledge of replication, HA/DR, performance tuning, and backup tools.
• Strong SQL debugging and optimization capabilities.
• Experience with Linux and Windows OS.
• Knowledge of AWS/Azure/GCP hosted database services (preferred).
• Scripting proficiency (Shell / PowerShell / Python).

Soft Skills

• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Good communication and documentation abilities.
• Ability to manage pressure, priorities, and deadlines.
• Team player with excellent coordination skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / IT or equivalent.
• Preferred Certifications:

  • MySQL DBA
  • Microsoft DP-300 / SQL Server certification
  • Cloud certifications (AWS/Azure)
