Introduction

IBM Client Engineering Designers take a human-centered perspective in value engineering. They understand the human needs behind a client's challenge through lean user research and participative activities (Enterprise Design Thinking) in client conversations. Designers can uncover additional client needs to be addressed with IBM Technologies, leading to cross-and up-sell opportunities. Designers are responsible for translating client needs into desirable experiences that connect business, technology, and user goals. We increase client satisfaction with meaningful outcomes and drive adoption by bringing real value to real people.

Your role and responsibilities

Skills:

· Independently leads complex client engagements with expert application of methodologies

· Clearly articulates design’s value and impact to business outcomes

· Defines user-centered strategies maximizing technology’s usefulness and adoption

· Possesses L3 skills in at least one core technology (data or automation), along with L2s in two other core technologies

· Independently manages projects or teams, showcasing strong leadership skills

· Exhibits mid-level UX/UI skills

· Builds a robust mentorship network across different specialties, orgs, and experience levels

· Works with the BTL to identify new engagement opportunities

Business Impact:

· Understands and articulates the main business outcomes for their product or service

· Defines the human-centered opportunity strategy for the account team to maximize usefulness and adoption of technologies

· Creates a successful design strategy from ambiguous requirements

· Directs other designers to successfully deliver on client engagements

· Develops buy-in and ownership by tailoring communication to meet stakeholder needs

· Consistently takes engagements through the end-to-end sales cycles with positive feedback from clients and the team

Professional Leadership & Influence

  • Leads multi-squad innovation engagements with enterprise clients, driving clarity on business outcomes and technical hypotheses
  • Shapes opportunity framing at early stages, collaborating with account teams, industry leaders, and product specialists to define measurable value
  • Defines the structure of co-creation experiences, ensuring alignment to business value, KPIs, and client priorities

Solution Design & Industry Expertise

  • Converts complex, ambiguous business problems into service blueprints, workflow concepts, and prototype architectures that demonstrate rapid, credible value
  • Drives discovery synthesis, persona development, process mapping, and backlog shaping for high-impact use cases
  • Collaborates with Solution Architects, AI, and Platform Engineers to shape solution hypotheses and success criteria

Technical & Innovation Design

  • Advanced practice in human-centered design, service design, and rapid concept validation with business and technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated expertise designing AI-powered user journeys, experience guardrails, generative AI workflows, conversational UX, and prompt strategy
  • Understands deployment pathways for rapid POCs using cloud-native architectures to define technical guardrails, integration paths, and scale considerations

Engagement Delivery

  • Accountable for end-to-end design quality and experience delivery across CE engagements, from discovery through review
  • Manages cross-functional squad cadence, solution milestones, and value demonstration strategy
  • Skilled in executive storytelling and experience curation, tailoring deliverables to specific business outcomes, operational KPIs, and transformation narratives
Preferred technical and professional experience
  • Business Integration: Experience in connecting user and service design with the broader business context, including business framing, to create holistic solutions for clients.
  • Agile and LEAN Methodologies: Proficiency in Agile and LEAN methodologies, including experience working in collaborative environments. Capable of understanding stakeholder requirements and ensuring that designs align with user needs
  • Technical Fluency: Comfort and technical fluency with Hybrid Cloud and Data & AI concepts, enabling you to design solutions that leverage these technologies effectively.

The compensation range and benefits for this position are based on a full-time schedule for a full calendar year. The salary will vary depending on your job-related skills, experience and location. Pay increment and frequency of pay will be in accordance with employment classification and applicable laws. For part time roles, your compensation and benefits will be adjusted to reflect your hours. Benefits may be pro-rated for those who start working during the calendar year.


This position is eligible for participation in an IBM Sales Incentive plan. Actual incentive opportunity will be based on performance and the eligible Target Incentive, as addressed in the applicable plan, all of which is subject to change. The compensation range listed for this position is the IBM Reference Salary that is used when you are not actively participating in a sales plan. Your actual base pay plus incentive opportunity will be determined by the Incentive Plan assigned to you.
