Your role and responsibilities

Title: Director, Storage Design

Locations: Austin, TX; Research Triangle Park/Durham, NC (Only)

The IBM Storage business is $3.5B of which Storage SW is a $1B business. IBM Storage underwent significant transformation in 2023, aligning Storage Software with the broader IBM strategy focused on Hybrid Cloud, AI, and Security.

The Director, Storage Design will lead and oversee the global design team and technical content professionals within Storage. The role will be responsible for building and leading the IBM Storage design team to fundamentally improve and transform the usability and experience of IBM Storage products. The role will be focused on user experience, design and consumability of our Storage products in our Storage portfolio. The role will be responsible for leading and shaping the design strategy for our Storage portfolio, enhancing design quality, and ensuring that product design user experience aligns with the Storage business objectives and brand identity in the marketplace The leader will also lead creative sessions, manage budgets, and monitor team performance.

The Director, Storage design will play a critical role in the following Storage portfolio of products: Ceph as a Service, transforming the Software Defined Storage (SDS) platform, delivering AI for Storage, Scale, Defender, etc.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Design Planning:

• Developing and implementing design strategies to align with Storage goals and brand vision.
• Lead the Design Strategy and partner closely with Storage Development and Storage Product Management.

Team Leadership:

• Leading and mentoring a global design team, global technical content professionals and providing guidance and fostering a collaborative environment.
• Ability to lead design initiatives and drive strategy across complex projects.
• Provide mentorship and contribute to the growth of a collaborative and innovative design culture.

Creative Vision/Strategic Impact:

• Communicating the creative vision to design teams and stakeholders, ensuring consistency and quality across all projects.
• Strategic Thinker: Capable of crafting a design vision that aligns with both user and business needs, while maintaining a focus on long-term impact.

Project Management:

• Overseeing the entire design process, from concept to execution, and managing budgets and timelines.

Client Liaison:

• Collaborating with clients and stakeholders to understand their business needs and ensure that design solutions meet their requirements.
• Skilled in planning, conducting, and applying user research to inform and elevate design outcomes.
• Requires regular contact with external clients globally on designing our future products and enhancing them to be leading and winning in the market.

Staying Current:

• Keeping up to date with industry trends and incorporating relevant innovations into design practices.
• Understanding modern design thinking and design best practices, including but not limited to responsiveness and accessibility for complex applications.

Quality Control:

• Ensuring the quality and consistency of design across all projects.

Required education

Bachelor's Degree

Required technical and professional expertise

• Must be a Distinguished Designer (Band D) with strong product design experience.
• Must have experience leading and designing complex applications that win in the marketplace and make a business impact with client users.
• Must have experience with building products in the Cloud

• Must have experience working across Infrastructure Business Unit and co-creating and collaborating on user experience designs that impact the Storage Portfolio.
