See open jobs at IBM.See open jobs similar to "Quantum Computing Pre-Doctoral Researcher" WCT-FCT.The School of Mathematics at Trinity College Dublin and IBM Research Dublin invite applications for a jointly supervised, fully funded PhD position. The PhD project will concern the use of integrability to approximate time evolution on a quantum computer.
Integrable models are a special model that arise in theoretical and mathematical physics. They are characterised by the presence of a large amount of independent commuting operators. Because of this they usually have some special properties such as solvability which give us good control over the properties of these models.
We seek a PhD student who will investigate how well aspects of generic quantum systems and quantum circuits can be approximated by integrable systems. Of particular interest is the time evolution of states. The student will study what types of models can be closely approximated while imposing integrability constraints and how this can be implemented as a quantum circuit. The starting point will be regular integrable models with nearest neighbour interactions, but this will be extended to models with longer range interactions and inhomogeneities.
The PhD student will be a full-time registered student at Trinity College Dublin and will complete the required coursework and progress reports for the award of a PhD while supported as an employee of IBM Research.
This selected student will have the following benefits:
A successful candidate should have a strong background in mathematical and theoretical physics. Experience in quantum computing or quantum information theory would also be helpful but is not required. On top of having outstanding records of accomplishments at undergraduate or Master level, the candidate will be expected to be self-motivated with a passion for scientific research and advanced technology development. The successful candidate will be required to relocate to Dublin, Ireland and remain there throughout the duration of PhD studies.
