Your Role and Responsibilities
Positions is required full time onsite at Radford VA.

This position is for a Virtualization Engineer. The Solution is a Flexpod solution supported vSphere and ESXI with Cisco UCS and Cisco X-Series blades with a mix of storage from NetApp and Pure. The solution is a hyperconverged, multitenant private cloud hosting environment for hosting Army enterprise and tactical applications. Its utilizing the full suite of VMware products (ESXi, vSAN, NSX, vCloud Foundations, ARIA Automation, Tanzu) to implement a Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) across multiple global sites. This program provides value added common and managed services built on top of the VMware foundation, that hosted Army applications will require.

  • Work with Government engineers to develop and maintain the architecture.
  • Develop, deploy, and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for deployment and sustainment of the VMware suite of products.
  • As applications are hosted on the solution, utilize IaC for the provisioning of the customer enclaves.
  • Provide daily administration of the VMware products to include patching and upgrading of all VMware components.
  • Monitor utilization of all virtualization resources and notify the lead when additional resources will be required.
  • Harden the VMware products per commercial best practices and the required government cybersecurity controls.
  • Troubleshooting and root cause analysis of any hosting platform issues.
  • Develop and maintain system, infrastructure, and process documentation (system diagrams, network topology, software configurations, device configurations, standard operating procedures).
  • Provide on-call support for triage and resolution of after-hours production incidents.
  • Make recommendations for improvements to security, scalability, manageability, and performance across a wide variety of network, storage, and compute services and technologies.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

Required Certifications:
Security+ or equivalent DoD 8570.01-M IA Tech Level II certification.

Must have (or obtain within 6 months of hire) VMware Certified Professional (VCP), Advanced Professional (VCAP), or Design Expert (VCDX) certification in any of the following tracks:

  • Data Center Virtualization
  • Cloud Management and Automation
  • Network Virtualization
  • Application Modernization
  • Requires 10 years of related experience or (Masters plus 12 years of related experience)
  • Senior level experience with the VMware suite of products (ESXi, vSAN, NSX, vCloud Foundations, ARIA Automation, Tanzu).
  • Strong automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across the entire technology stack network, storage, server, and applications


Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
Working knowledge of DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG) and the Information Assurance Vulnerability Management (IAVM) process.
