About the position
Duties
As a Project Technologist, you will be responsible for:
• Assisting vessel maintenance managers in coordinating contracted maintenance and in-service engineering work on Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) vessels in the Atlantic region.
• Developing technical documentation in support of engineering design, procurement, installation, maintenance and disposal of CCG fleet assets. This includes writing technical specifications, statements of work, and procedures; carrying out options analyses and impact assessments; and producing computer aided design (CAD) drawings.
• Analyzing machinery data, inventories, and drawings to assist with the preparation of specifications for the acquisition and overhaul of major equipment or components.
• Providing lifecycle management services in support of design, procurement, installation, maintenance and disposal activities for CCG assets.
• Validating maintenance, repairs, and fabrication, by witnessing inspections, tests, and trials onboard CCG vessels, in shipyards, and at contractor’s facilities.
• Performing on-site verification of compliance of all "As-Fitted" CCG vessel drawings to various regulations, standards and specifications.
• Verifying contract deliverables for accuracy and validity, such as updated drawings; test and trial reports; measurements for specific equipment; and engineering design documentation.

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is a special operating agency within the Department of National Defence (DND). We help to ensure our country’s sovereignty and security through our presence in Canadian waters. The CCG proudly serves 243,000 kilometers of Canada’s vast and rugged coastline, the longest coastline of any given country, and is one of the few federal agencies that provides direct, front-line services 24 hours a day 7 days a week.Integrated Technical Services (ITS) is a dynamic organization within the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), with the mandate to deliver technical services and solutions in order to ensure that the CCG’s varied physical assets are capable, reliable and available to deliver CCG Programs to Canadians. Marine Engineering (ME) is a branch within CCG's ITS Directorate in Headquarters and in the region that consists of a national team of marine professionals—engineers, marine engineers, technicians and others—who work collectively with other ITS branches and Fleet with a focus on in-service support for all marine engineering aspects in both our current and future fleet.ME provides national strategic and functional management, engineering and leadership in the delivery of life cycle asset management. Marine Engineering has 7 units that enhance Coast Guard's ability to plan, manage, execute and report vessel maintenance as well as providing and interfacing technical expertise across the country to the CCG marine engineering community.These positions normally work in an office environment with frequent periods of travel when the incumbent visits vessels, ship yards and other contractor sites.
Intent of the process
The immediate need is to staff one position on an indeterminate basis in Dartmouth, NS.
A pool of candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions within the Department of National Defence on an indeterminate or specified period (including term, acting, or assignment) basis.

• Must wear and maintain CSA approved safety footwear and maintain job-related personal safety equipment.
• Required to travel using various means of transportation such as ships, planes, and helicopters, sometimes on short notice.
• Requirement to, occasionally, work extended hours or overtime to meet operational requirements.
• Required to conduct site visits to vessels, shipyards, and other industrial sites, involving walking over rough terrain and/or climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolding, or other structures, maintaining balance on a moving vessel, and bending in awkward positions and working in confined spaces.

Graduation with a diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in Naval Architecture technology with experience in a marine environment* or equivalent**.

• Experience in reading or writing technical documents, such as statements of work and technical statements of requirements, drawings, for engineering projects or initiatives.
• Experience in analyzing issues, assessing impacts, and developing options or solutions in a marine environment*.* Marine Environment is defined as either shipboard operations or an industry directly involved with the maintenance, overhaul or repair of cargo or passenger vessels.
• Experience using Transport Canada (TC), Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), and Classification Society regulations.
• Experience producing structural vessel drawings for steel repairs, steel designs, or structural arrangements.
• Experience in using AutoCAD 2010 or later to generate detailed 2D vessel drawings.

• Two or more years of experience working in a Marine Environment*. * Marine Environment is defined as either shipboard operations or an industry directly involved with the maintenance, overhaul or repair of cargo or passenger vessels.
• Experience managing new vessel construction or vessel refits.
• Experience in producing drawings for electrical systems, including block diagrams and, schematics.
• Experience in producing drawings for mechanical systems, including block diagrams and, schematics.
• Experience in analyzing ship stability, including the relative positions of CoB, CoG, Metacentre in various conditions.
• Experience with GHS software or equivalent for intact and damage analysis stability analyses.
• Experience with hand calculations for simple structural analyses (bending moments, UDL’s, point loads etc.) to analyze local stress and be able to calculate shear area of ship sections.
• Two or more years of experience in using AutoCAD 2010 or later to generate detailed structural, mechanical, and electrical 2D vessel drawings.
• Experience in using various software such as Rhino3D to model vessel hulls and structure.
• Experience with on site surveys wherein technical information was gathered using common industry survey techniques (measurements, pictures, videos, red-lining drawings, etc.).
• Knowledge of preparing weights on and off estimates with a focus on its impact on ship stability.
