Duties

The student will carry out precision nutrition simulations and in vivo and in silico experiments.
Write scientific protocols
Gather and analyze data from animal phases

Work environment

The student will join a research team specialized in developing sustainable precision feeding for swine. The aim of the proposed project is to calibrate a precision feeding model by integrating an energy use estimate, as well as identify factors that influence body composition and energy use efficiency in growing and finishing pigs. The project also includes an assessment of the impact of alternative ingredients in swine feed on performance, body composition, lipid synthesis and nutrient balance.

The Sherbrooke Research and Development Centre, located at 2000 College Street in Sherbrooke, Quebec, is the only Agriculture and Agri Food Canada research centre that is dedicated exclusively to dairy and swine production. Specializing in a number of different disciplines in the areas of animal science such as husbandry, nutrition, functional genomics, agro environmental processes, behaviour study and meat quality, the centre’s research teams are able to conduct both fundamental and applied research to gain insight into and develop solutions to issues related to livestock production.

Education:
Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a PhD program at a recognized post-secondary academic institution with specialization in: Animal Science

Note: Must be currently recognized as having full-time student status in the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled, pending approval of acceptance or in the process of submitting your application. Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start date and must be returning to full-time studies for your next academic term.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience carrying out swine nutrition research projects
Experience gathering and analyzing swine production data
Experience managing, processing and analyzing data from in silico experiments (e.g., meta analysis, modelling, life cycle analysis)
Experience drafting scientific communications (e.g., summaries, posters, articles)
Experience coordinating projects
Experience formulating diets for swine
