*Note: if not already residing in the area, the selected candidate will be required to relocate. Work locations are non-negotiable. The employee will be required to report to the office in Rocky Harbour, daily. Housing may not be provided.

Duties of Resource Management Technician II (EG 02) include a mix of fieldwork and office work:
• Field project set-up and installation support (e.g. assembly, installation, calibration and operation of tools and equipment, etc.)
• Feedback/operational input (e.g. equipment performance, best routes, appropriate environmental condition, etc.)
• Basic and routine maintenance of equipment and assistance in acquisition of new equipment.
• Maintenance of records, including technical logs, files, and databases
• Assembly of data and input and support with document formatting and presentations.
• Technical input, feedback and reports to colleagues and project leads on assigned project activities.
• Collection, entering, and organizing data and performing quality control verification and resolving data issues with guidance.
• Contribution to other Parks Canada functions such as visitor experience, outreach, asset management and incident response operations.
Our team works on a variety of projects in a variety of ecosystems including Species at Risk monitoring, environmental surveillance and monitoring and active management projects. Team members spend time travelling in a variety of front country and remote wilderness and mountainous terrain thus staff must be comfortable travelling and navigating in back country settings.
Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and preservation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

The Resource Conservation team at the Western Newfoundland and Labrador Field Unit is responsible for delivering programs in three national parks (Gros Morne National Park, Torngat Mountains National Park, and Akami-uapisku – KakKasuak – Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve) and four national historic sites. These programs include ecological integrity monitoring, active management of ecosystems, species at risk protection and recovery, environmental impact assessment, environmental protection, and ecological restoration. Resource Conservation staff also support the field unit in such activities as research permitting, providing scientific advice and support to park managers, working with external partners, and contributing to visitor programs and incident response operations.
The results of this process will be used to fill one 6-month position.
A list of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to fill similar positions of various tenures (temporary, seasonal, full-time, part-time) and work locations.

Education:
Completion of two years of a post-secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g., biology, ecology, geology);
OR
An acceptable combination of education, training and experience in a field related to the position.
Experience
• Experience in travelling or working in the field/on the land (this may include but is not limited to hiking, backpacking, snowmobiling, operating a boat, skiing, snowshoeing, and can occur on personal time, through work experience or course work).
• Experience collecting data/samples on vegetation, fauna, water, and soil using recognized methods and protocols and using variety of data/sample collection equipment.
• Experience applying scientifically and technically recognized methods and protocols.
English essential
Information on language requirements
Knowledge
• Knowledge of terrestrial/marine environment, vegetation and wildlife characteristics, as well as weather conditions specific to Gros Morne National Park.
• Knowledge of technical and scientific equipment operation and maintenance requirements.
Abilities
• Ability to follow appropriate protocols for data/sample collection and compilation, and to conduct active resource management activity.
• Ability to adapt as required to meet unexpected conditions (i.e. local variability, weather, equipment failure, etc.)
• Ability to use a variety of computer applications in the entering and management of data.
Personal Suitability

Asset Experience
• Experience working on species at risk conservation.
• Experience conducting environmental surveillance on construction sites.
• Experience in forest ecology and management, including for example forest inventory, silviculture, restoration, or protection.
• Experience participating in multiday backcountry trips.
• Experience with Search and Rescue and/or First Aid.
• Significant* experience with snowmobiles.
* Significant experience operating a snowmobile is defined as using a snowmobile for work or recreation both on and off trail on a regular basis for at least 5 years.
Operational Requirements
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment.
• Willingness to use safe work practices (training and terms of use provided).
• Willingness to complete training provided by Parks Canada, including wilderness first aid certification.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory. holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required and possibly on short notice.
• Willingness and ability to hike long distances including multi-day hikes.
• Willingness to work and travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various modes of transportation.
• Willingness to travel over roads closed to the general public and work in and around construction sites.
• Willingness to support park compliance and prevention programs, complete Duty Officer shifts and respond to emergency situations (e.g., rescues, searches, spills).
• Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance.
• Possession of a valid Class 5 Driver’s license.
• Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks.
