Accompany and ensure the health and safety at work (HSW) of the inspector performing tasks in potentially hazardous environments, such as a grain ship’s hold. The sentinel plays a crucial role in monitoring working conditions, detecting potential risks, and intervening quickly in case of danger. They also maintain constant communication with the inspector to ensure all safety measures are followed, allowing the inspector to work safely. Other tasks related to the examination and transportation of equipment may be added.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established.
The intent of this process is to staff an as-needed term position.
The successful candidate will work as required in support of vessel inspections. As the work depends on ship arrivals, there will be no guaranteed minimum hour, and the number of hours will vary from one day and one week to the next.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION
EEd1 - For individuals who are currently employees of CFIA, or who have inspection experience with CFIA or its precursor departments:
• Completion of post-secondary education specializing in relevant technical sciences OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
For individuals who are not current or former employees of CFIA:
• Completion of post-secondary education specializing in relevant technical sciences.
CFIA Operations will apply a preference for:
• University graduation with specialization in a field related to the functions of the position.
Applicants submitting education credentials from a non-Canadian institution are responsible for obtaining certification that these credentials are the equivalent of the Canadian education level required for the position.

Reliability Status security clearance - Applicants who have not lived in Canada for the past five (or ten, depending on security level) years may be required to submit a police certificate from each country in which they have lived for six months or more during this period, as well as other documentation required for the security screening process. Failure to submit this documentation if requested will eliminate the application from further consideration.

• Willing and available to work irregular hours (e.g., days, nights, weekends, statutory holidays).
• Willing and available to work overtime, as required.
• To have and maintain a valid driver`s license.
• To use in the prescribed circumstances and manner all prescribed safety materials, equipment, devices and clothing.
• Willing and available to travel frequently, as required.
• Willing and able to travel in small boats and/or small planes.
• Willing and able to work in environmentally challenging or physically demanding conditions.
• Willing and able to work in environmentally challenging or physically demanding conditions including at heights, on and over water, aboard vessels in adverse weather and varying light conditions.
• Willing and able to carry and wear 20 kg of protective equipment while performing duties.
• To successfully complete Fall Arrest and Rescue Training.
