About the Role:

Global Edmonton is currently seeking a part-time Weather Anchor to join their team. Reporting to the News Director / Station Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing engaging weather forecasts on-air and across a variety of other platforms as required. This role will require constantly working early weekend mornings and filling a variety of shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. This is a Group I position under the current collective agreement.

You will contribute by:

  • Planning, producing, and presenting dynamic, informative, live, and pre-taped weather forecasts.
  • Researching and developing original, creative story ideas relating to weather
  • Reporting live on-location when required, which could include significant weather events.
  • Pitching, writing, booking guests, and conducting interviews.
  • Actively using social media to connect with our audience and enhance our weather coverage.
  • Writing, posting, and promoting weather content for globalnews.ca.
  • Providing support for any weather-related breaking news for all platforms (TV, radio, and online) when needed
  • Consulting with other Global News meteorologists and weather anchors to develop and support best practices for our weather forecasts and storytelling.
  • Staying informed of local and national news and weather events
  • Participating in Global News promotional and community activities as required
  • Acting as an ambassador for the station, city, and community

Skills and experience you will bring:

  • Post-secondary education (or equivalent experience) in Journalism, Broadcasting, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge or experience using computerized weather graphics systems
  • Meteorology degree and/or Canadian Meteorology and Oceanographic Society (C.M.O.S.) accreditation is a strong asset.
  • Minimum 3 years of on-air anchoring or reporting experience.
  • Strong on-air presentation skills, with an emphasis on unscripted material.
  • Experience building, forecasting, and presenting weather through WSI is a definite asset.
  • Excellent computer skills and a working knowledge of how major news organizations are employing a wide range of digital platforms, formats, and social media.
  • Must be able to manage the demands and pressure of multiple, daily online and broadcast deadlines.
  • Enthusiasm and passion for all forms of news - with an emphasis on weather storytelling.
  • A “plugged-in” multi-tasker with a positive can-do attitude and proven ability to make editorial decisions.
  • A collaborative team-player who strives to support all colleagues.
