About the Role:

Global Calgary is currently seeking a permanent full-time Digital Journalist to join their team. Reporting to the Managing Editor, the successful candidate will be responsible for reporting, shooting video, writing, editing video, posting, and promoting content for TV, online and radio. This role involves working a variety of shifts including early morning, day, and permanent night shifts. This is Group H position under the current collective agreement.

  • Research and develop original and enterprising local news story ideas.
  • Report, shoot, write and edit stories for multiple daily newscasts and for globalnews.ca.
  • Meet multiple daily deadlines to write, post, promote, update and curate local, regional, and national content on globalnews.ca.
  • Report live on location and in studio as required.
  • Write and file radio voicers and deliver live debriefs on talk radio.
  • Participate in assignment meetings.
  • Be a strong advocate, model and mentor for digital journalism and a video-first workflow.
  • Works closely with staff based in Lethbridge and Edmonton
  • Participate in Global Calgary promotional and community initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Skills and experience you will bring:

  • Post-secondary education (or equivalent experience) in broadcast journalism or a related field.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in major market broadcast and online journalism.
  • A minimum of three years of major market live reporting experience with proven on-air presentation, including live remotes and unscripted material.
  • Experience anchoring and producing in a major market is considered an asset.
  • Proven shooting and editing experience are required.
  • Adept writer for broadcast and online journalism with great online and traditional story research skills
  • An innovator with confidence in making editorial decisions.
  • This position requires someone who is comfortable working both independently and cooperatively in a team environment, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with Canadian Press Style and experience publishing in WordPress are assets.
  • Willing and able to adapt to rapidly changing technology and workflows.
  • Organized and able to make quick and effective decisions under pressure.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driver’s abstract.
