Amazon Public Policy seeks a Manager, External Engagement to join our team in the Ohio region. The person hired for this role will execute and develop an external engagement strategy for their assigned regions in support of Amazon's effort to be the most trusted business and community partner.
The Manager will serve as a member of Amazon's Public Policy team, driving engagement with local stakeholders, business organizations, and civic associations in their region. They will execute and may develop strategic approaches for external engagement, contribute to setting priorities, and deliver outcomes for community partnerships and stakeholder relationships. They will work in close collaboration, and form robust relationships, with internal business partners such as Amazon InCommunities, Communications, Economic Development Project Managers, and AWS Infrastructure teams.
A major focus of this role will be engaging with community and civic leaders, local opinion leaders, local government officials, and other hyper-local stakeholders to establish and foster relationships and partnerships in support of Amazon's presence in the region. The Manager will contribute to event planning and coordination efforts that bring together community stakeholders, business leaders, and Amazon representatives to strengthen local partnerships and advance engagement objectives.
The Manager should feel just as comfortable speaking at a civic association meeting as they do speaking in front of a regional business group. The Manager will meet people where they are in ways that are meaningful to customers, neighbors, and other local stakeholders. The ideal candidate for this role will be a visible, involved, and engaged presence in the community and throughout their assigned region. They will have experience in developing community engagement strategies connected to targeted goals and deliverables, and their experience will demonstrate a track record of moving initiatives from concept to completion.
This position will report to the Senior Manager, External Engagement - Public Policy and will be based in Ohio.
Key job responsibilities
Strategy Execution & Development
- Use expertise to lead external engagement initiatives where the problem, plan, or strategy may not be defined. Deliver independently, seeking limited guidance when needed.
- Execute and may develop strategies that advance Amazon's business goals in your assigned region through community engagement connected to targeted goals and deliverables.
- Create key business review documents that inform leadership decisions on regional engagement priorities.
- Determine necessary resources for effective engagement on community and stakeholder priorities; may manage a budget.
- Develop and drive engagement positions on community issues, drawing from complex subject matter expertise and regional context.
Scope & Cross-Organizational Collaboration
- Work across an organization and may work across multiple organizations (Public Policy, InCommunities, Communications, Economic Development, AWS Infrastructure) to influence organizational decisions.
- Influence org decisions and may influence business decisions in other organizations through community intelligence and stakeholder insights.
- Engage public policy stakeholders through direct and indirect advocacy in support of Amazon's community presence and business objectives.
Execution & Problem Solving
- Handle complex problems, efforts, decisions, and escalations related to community engagement, stakeholder management, and Amazon's regional presence.
- Learn to force multiply by identifying opportunities to build consensus and enable others to advance engagement objectives.
- Own and develop external relationships with public policy stakeholders, community leaders, civic associations, and local policymakers.
- Make trade-offs between short-term and long-term needs when prioritizing engagement initiatives and community partnerships.
- Move initiatives from concept to completion, delivering measurable outcomes using traditional and non-traditional metrics.
External Engagement & Stakeholder Relationships
- Develop and drive positions on external community issues, drawing from complex subject matter expertise and regional policy context.
- Contribute to event planning and coordination efforts that bring together community stakeholders, business leaders, and Amazon representatives to strengthen local partnerships.
- Own and develop relationships with community partners, civic leaders, local government officials, and opinion leaders.
- Advocate for Amazon's community presence through both direct and indirect advocacy with public policy stakeholders.
- Serve as a visible, involved, and engaged presence in the community throughout assigned regions.
Communication
- Communicate effectively (written and verbal) to audiences including senior leadership (Director+), external civic audiences, and community groups.
- Create key business review documents including engagement plans, regional assessments, and community impact summaries.
- Translate Amazon's presence and operations into community-relevant messaging for a variety of audiences.
Talent Development & Hiring
- Participate in the team's hiring process through phone screens, loop participation, and candidate referrals to build the talent pipeline.
- Mentor and may develop others on the team, sharing expertise in stakeholder engagement and community strategy.
- May participate in the organization's broader hiring process.
Process Improvement & Operational Excellence
- Drive the use of best practices across teams to streamline engagement operations and improve delivery for community partners and internal stakeholders.
- Identify and implement improvements to engagement processes, reducing bottlenecks and enabling faster outcomes.
- Measure success using traditional and non-traditional metrics and contribute to accountability for regional outcomes.
