As a Senior Civil/Structural Substation Design Engineer you will be a part of highly creative, efficient team tasked with tackling fascinating and challenging problems of designing, permitting and building HV & MV Substations and associated Grid Connections that power our cloud business.
The CSA Team are responsible for achieving a world class uptime for our customers and drive to develop a fleet of buildings emphasizing security, safety, efficiency, and cost effectiveness, while finding new ways to meet AWS’s growing demand. We justify and communicate the technical decisions we make to AWS leadership and work hard to drive continuous advancements in our designs. As Senior Civil/Structural Substation Design Engineer at AWS, you will have the opportunity to impact changes in our current design, as well as establish design procedures and protocols for future systems.
The Civil, Structural & Architectural (CSA) Design Team is responsible for the design of all Amazon Data Centre and Substations world-wide. The Senior Civil/Structural Substation Design Engineer will become part of our global CSA team. As a part of this team, you will be part of a highly creative and efficient design team comprising Civil Engineers, Structural Engineer & Architects tasked with solving problems and challenging the status quo. As a subject matter expert, you will have a direct impact on the design of prototypical projects, provide technical guidance to team members, solve large scale implementation issues, and build a strong understanding of international CSA design requirements.
The Senior Civil/Structural Substation Design Engineer will be responsible for the following:
- Full CSA scope for HV/MV Substation and associated Grid Connection projects;
- Develop and maintain a Basis of Design, prototype design and template specifications for HV/MV Substations and associated Grid Connection projects;
- Manage the portfolio of HV/MV design projects;
- Evaluate reports and create scope for geotechnical investigation testing;
- Create, review and release HV/MV RFP’s for external Design Consultants;
- Work with HV & Electrical Engineers to produce substation site layouts during data centre masterplanning design;
- Manage our external CSA Design Consultants through the Design & Construction Administration phase of projects;
- During the Design Phase, act as the Owners Representative ensuring timely delivery, within budget and to the required quality level.
This shall specifically include:
o review of Civil Engineering designs including roads, drainage, civil site works, bulk earthworks, cut/fill analysis, retaining walls; evaluating Civil Engineering design options, and assessing Civil Engineering calculation assumptions;
o review of Structural Engineering designs including foundations, primary and secondary frame, services supports, gantries; evaluating Structural Engineering design options, and assessing Structural Engineering calculation assumptions;
o review of Architectural designs including cladding, roofing, doors and internal layouts; evaluating Architectural design options, and assessing Architectural calculation assumptions;
- Prepare and execute Building Permit strategies for HV/MV Substation and associated Grid Connections;
- Liaise with the Authority having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and Energy Utility regarding Building Permitting and Design approvals ;
- Coordinate with internal and external MEP Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, Construction Managers, Technical Programme Managers and other related disciplines;
- Lead initiatives aimed at improving cost, quality, schedule, and consistency;
- Travel for site assessments, consultant selection activities, internal design meetings, construction review, interface with AHJs, design consultants, quantity surveyors, and building owners;
- Anticipated travel not to exceed 25%.
