Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and we’ve designed the system with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
Export Control : This position requires that the candidate selected be a U.S. Citizen in order to comply with U.S. government-imposed requirements related to the nature of the work and/or where it will be performed.
Amazon Leo Productivity Infrastructure & Engineering (ALPINE) owns and operates the core enterprise infrastructure that enables Amazon Leo's 7,000+ engineering workforce to design, build, test, and ship software. Our portfolio spans Atlassian, SAP, Engineering Test Platforms, Requirements Management, and a License Server Fleet deployed across commercial AWS GovCloud environments.
We are looking for a Senior Systems Development Engineer to serve as a senior technical contributor across ALPINE-managed services while driving AI integration readiness. You will own infrastructure reliability, scalability, and security across our service portfolio while designing and building the interfaces and APIs that allow AI agents to interact with these services safely and at scale.
This role combines deep infrastructure ownership with forward-looking platform engineering — maintaining Tier-1 services today while building the foundation for AI-powered engineering workflows. You will operate within AWS GovCloud under FedRAMP High requirements and partner with Amazon Leo Security and Global Trade & Compliance teams.
Key job responsibilities
Own and operate infrastructure across ALPINE's service portfolio, ensuring availability, performance, and security for Tier-1 services
Design and deploy integration interfaces that expose ALPINE services to AI orchestration layers
Implement authorization controls ensuring AI agents operate within user permission boundaries
Drive infrastructure-as-code improvements, pipeline modernization, and deployment standardization across commercial and GovCloud environments
Harden workloads with security best practices including network segmentation, TLS enforcement, and minimal-privilege configurations
Implement authentication and policy enforcement at the integration layer
Participate in on-call rotations; own operational excellence including runbooks, monitoring, and incident response
Collaborate on architecture reviews, threat modeling, and security compliance reviews
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines with integrated security gates
Produce architecture documentation and integration specifications
Identify and drive operational improvements through automation and improved observability
A day in the life
Your morning starts with the ALPINE operational dashboards; triaging overnight alarms, verifying AI-initiated queries respected classification retrieval gates, and confirming deployment pipeline health across the fleet. From there you shift into building: writing CDK to stand up a new MCP server, implementing token flows for transitive authorization, troubleshooting a canary failure caused by a certificate rotation, or designing cross-partition data paths that satisfy both network segmentation and AI-platform access requirements.
The afternoon might find you in a design review sketching out how to safely expose SAP transaction data to the AI orchestration layer, rolling out a shared CDK construct across multiple Atlassian deployments, updating runbooks, or reviewing a teammate's PR for a new MCP integration. Every day spans the full stack; keeping Tier-1 production services healthy while building the connective tissue for AI-powered engineering workflows.
About the team
You will join the ALPINE "Jedi Council," a small group of senior engineers who collectively own the technical direction and operational health of the entire ALPINE service portfolio. The team operates as a collaborative technical council rather than a traditional hierarchy; each member brings deep expertise in a subset of the portfolio while contributing to decisions that affect the whole fleet. You will work alongside infrastructure engineers, security partners, and compliance stakeholders across Amazon Leo to deliver reliable, secure tooling for over 7,000 engineers.
Our mission is to keep Amazon Leo's core engineering infrastructure running at Tier-1 availability while building the next generation of AI-ready platform interfaces. Our customers are the engineers, program managers, and technical leaders across Leo who depend on tools like Jira, Confluence, SAP, and our test platforms every day. The problems we solve range from keeping enterprise systems performant and compliant in GovCloud to enabling AI agents to safely interact with those systems on behalf of users. This is a team where you will have direct impact on both day-to-day engineering productivity and the long-term AI strategy for the organization.
