Description

Amazon is building technology that makes a meaningful difference in people's lives. Amazon Access is addressing one of healthcare's most enduring challenges: connecting millions of Americans to the benefits they are entitled to, but struggle to access. We are building the systems that eliminate that gap.

As a Software Development Engineer III on this team, you will play a critical role in designing and building greenfield infrastructure at Amazon scale. You will own architectural decisions across real-time distributed systems, machine learning–powered eligibility engines, and AI-driven personalization platforms. This is a high-impact, high-ownership role where your foundational technical choices will shape a product serving millions of transactions and delivering tangible value to people who need it most.

We are looking for engineers who excel in ambiguous environments, take end-to-end ownership, and are motivated by seeing the direct impact of their work. If you are energized by complex problems at the intersection of healthcare, fintech, and large-scale distributed systems - and want to build something transformative from the ground up, we want to hear from you.

What We're Looking For
•Engineers who thrive in ambiguity and architect systems with long-term scalability in mind
•Builders who ship early, iterate fast, and hold themselves to a high bar
•Individuals who want to do some of the most impactful and formative work of their career

Key job responsibilities
Team Building & Engineering Culture
•Contribute to building the engineering team from the ground up, including hiring, onboarding, and establishing a high bar for technical talent
•Help shape the team's engineering culture: how decisions are made, how collaboration happens, and what standards define excellence
•Establish engineering norms, rituals, and a culture of ownership from inception
•Partner with principal engineers, product leaders, and applied scientists to bring high-impact initiatives, models, and experimentation frameworks to production
•Foster a learning environment through knowledge sharing, mentorship, and engineering best practices

System Design & Architecture
•Design and build scalable, highly available services for healthcare benefits at Amazon scale
•Develop ML-integrated systems with intelligent matching, personalization, and optimization capabilities that improve over time
•Write high-quality, well-tested production code and actively participate in design and code reviews
•Build data pipelines that process large-scale healthcare benefits signals
•Apply engineering best practices including back testing, offline evaluation, and rigorous experiment design to measure real-world impact

Operational Excellence
•Own systems end-to-end: design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and on-call support
•Build robust observability — metrics, alarms, and dashboards that surface system health in real time
•Participate in on-call rotations and drive root-cause analysis for production issues
•Design for resilience: implement graceful degradation, circuit breakers, and fallback strategies for mission-critical services

Innovation & Continuous Improvement
•Leverage AI-powered tools to accelerate development velocity and improve code quality
•Identify opportunities for automation and machine learning within your domain
•Propose and execute technical improvements that reduce operational overhead or enhance system performance
•Stay current with advances in healthcare technology, machine learning, and distributed systems

About the team
Join the founding Bangalore engineering team building Amazon's healthcare benefits platform from scratch - a strategic investment connecting millions of Americans to benefits they cannot easily access today. As one of the team's technical architects, you will shape the technical foundation of greenfield infrastructure at Amazon scale, with direct and measurable impact.
