Description

This role will be responsible for collaborating with OEMs on developing, standardizing, implementing, and troubleshooting controls, electrical, and hardware solutions for robotics and material handling systems, acting as a liaison for internal and external resources, and developing solutions to meet scaling needs. The Systems Development Engineer will define requirements and standards from individual work cells to large complex MHE integration across multiple vendors. The position will balance controls and software integration between internal and external stakeholders, as well as provide commissioning support to the Operations Engineering Teams on achieving system performance prior to, during, and after launch of greenfield sites and/or retrofit sites.

This role requires up to 50% regional travel on a yearly basis and availability to work from a corporate office when not traveling. Candidates should either live near or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance of the office. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Key job responsibilities
• Develop, maintain, and extend PLC code within the NCS (Nexus Control System) code library, including Add-On Instructions (AOIs) and structured text/ladder logic
• Implement NCS code library solutions on new and existing MHE projects, ensuring adherence to NCS standards and configuration requirements
• Perform PLC and IPC control level issues and performance diagnosis using Codesys, Python, and Studio 5000 software
• Define and measure system performance KPIs, leveraging industry standard PackML
• Prepare specifications and technical detail to fully define performance on equipment, materials, and services
• Follow and enforce industrial network security requirements
• Follow change management process and develop ad-hoc PLC ladder and/or structured text code changes
• Provide detailed analysis and testing of existing and new engineering solutions and components
• Work with IT, FC Software, Vendors, and Operations Engineering to support new MHE system deployments utilizing NCS code
• Undertake industrial engineering design on existing and new material handling systems across the World Wide network
• Provide technical documentation such as flow diagrams, conveyor and equipment layouts, installation details, and integration specifications
• Support commissioning of new automation elements and designs leveraging the NCS code library
• Actively participate in local or World-Wide network level controls projects and initiatives
• Provide value engineering and value analysis
• Ensure adherence to all Health & Safety procedures; be proactive in raising potential H&S issues and developing personal safety awareness
• Use AutoCAD to review, develop, and maintain electrical schematic and conveyor layout drawings
• Fully understand and ensure procedural adherence to industry operating standards such as the NEC and NFPA
• Support emulation and simulation modeling of material handling systems
• Document control system and equipment configuration changes and keep documentation updated on the global project repository • Partner with all FC stakeholders to build effective relationships • Conduct post go-live audits to determine performance benchmarks with fulfillment center stakeholders
• Ability to travel up to 50%

About the team
The Controls Development, Controls Design, and Concept Design Engineering (C3) team supports retrofit designs for first mile retrofits as well as controls and solutions development for future projects. The team leads the development and deployment of the Nexus Control System (NCS) code library, driving standardization of PLC controls across the World Wide MHE network.
