We are looking for a manager for the Global Health and Safety Sciences team who will be responsible for managing a team of Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH), ergonomist (Ergo), and Electrical Safety Subject matter experts. This role will drive a strategic approach to delivering high-level safety technical services for the AWS Safety team, strategic team leadership and development, setting and driving team vision and objectives, mentoring and growing talent, managing team performance and career development
The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated manager with a solid knowledge in Industrial Hygiene (IH) and ergonomics (Ergo), and a proven track record of managing, deploying, and executing global safety IH and Ergo programs. They will have a history of building partnerships with diverse teams across multiple jurisdictions. The candidate must have the ability to define clear requirements in ambiguity, proactively educate team members, leaders, and other support teams, and communicate effectively and consistently throughout all levels of the business. The role will evolve with the maturity and growth of the program and requires a high degree of flexibility, including the ability to deep dive into time critical programs and projects, manage a team, and deliver continuous improvement actions.
The AWS Health and Safety (H&S) team is an expanding a dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWS’s growth around the world, as well as ensuring compliance of AWS’s global operations, including physical data centers, as well as other AWS facilities, customer-facing enterprises and products. The H&S team has responsibility for architecting and implementing AWS’s global safety programs. This includes defining and implementing risk management and compliance systems and driving their continuous improvement; setting and refining global policies and procedures; overseeing the development of standards, tools, auditing and metrics, and employee training; ensuring effective engagement by H&S teams on global initiatives, including those that are part of Amazon’s ambitious sustainability goals; providing specialist expertise; and engaging with all AWS business units to provide scalable and H&S compliance strategies that support current and future business objectives while ensuring employee safety and compliance with H&S regulations.
Key job responsibilities
• Manage and oversee a team of CIHs and Ergonomists.
• Define organizational level IH risk assessment methodology and IH risk tolerances for the globe.
• Responsible to develop and implement new strategic and programmatic controls for existing or emerging complex IH risks, including but not limited to: Air Contaminants, Biological (Legionella in Cooling Systems), Chemical, Physical (Noise, Ionizing & Non-Ionizing, Temperature), Psychosocial and Indoor Air Quality.
• Engage cross organizationally with leadership and front-line teams to design IH and Ergo program controls and testing strategy.
• Earn trust of senior leadership by proactively engaging to understand the business, identify emerging risks, and develop risk mitigation strategies.
• Provide technical guidance and solution for global/complex problems, even when the situation is not well understood.
• Apply IH and Ergo principles into real life complex problems using modeling, data and other methods to eliminate or reduce risk of injury/illness.
• Use data and scientific literature to facilitate and drive business decisions. You will identify key trends through deep dive analysis (including statistical modelling) to justify IH and Ergo programs/initiatives and establish robust approaches to demonstrate the effectiveness and impact of programs.
• Maintain subject matter mastery and current industry knowledge to advise senior leadership on emerging trends and regulatory requirements with potential impacts to the business strategic roadmap.
• Establish and leverage industry partnerships in order to drive innovation in approaches to IH and Ergo to redefine industry best practices.
• Adapt to fast-paced environments with changing circumstances, direction, strategy and deadlines.
• High ethical standards with proven ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive information; excellent judgment, discretion and diplomacy.
• Exhibit excellent problem-solving skills, high judgment and attention to detail.
• Ensure record keeping is maintained and provide accurate reporting and metrics to support business safety initiatives.

A day in the life
We are looking for an analytical and results-oriented person to work directly with members of the safety engineering team, Data Center Health and Safety (DCHS) teams, Data Center Operations (DCO), and the various AWS Engineering teams to focus on developing and implementing safety engineering solutions.
