The AWS Health, and Safety (H&S) team is an expanding and dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWS’s growth around the world, as well as ensuring compliance of AWS’s global operations, including physical data centers, as well as other AWS facilities, customer-facing enterprises and products. The H&S team has responsibility for architecting and implementing AWS’s global health and safety programs. This includes defining and implementing risk management and compliance systems and driving their continuous improvement; setting and refining global policies and procedures; overseeing the development of standards, tools, auditing and metrics, and employee training; ensuring effective engagement by environmental and health & safety teams on global initiatives, including those that are part of Amazon’s ambitious sustainability goals; providing specialist expertise; and engaging with all AWS business units to provide scalable and effective environmental and health & safety compliance strategies that support current and future business objectives while ensuring employee safety and compliance with environmental and health & safety regulations.
We are searching for a Global Safety Engineer – Design for Safety who will support AWS Hardware Engineering and Design Teams by providing technical leadership associated with the developing products and installations designed to be safely maintained and operated by AWS employees. The Global Safety Engineer – Design for Safety will also work cross technical functions to manage internal equipment safety projects as well as be closely associated as project partner with design engineering teams providing safe design support throughout various phases of product and process design
Key job responsibilities
Utilize knowledge of Health and Safety technical and functional requirements to ensure Design for Safety and Partner teams build safe products and programs around these requirements
Work with Data Center Health and Safety team and other H&S field teams and stakeholders’ teams (Hardware Engineering, Data Center Engineering, Global Trade and Product Compliance (GTPC), Product Compliance Legal (PC Legal), Health and Safety Legal (HS Legal), and Operations) to implement Inherently Safe Design principles within work processes and new equipment/product designs
Provide H&S input during the product scoping phase to ensure H&S workplace safety concerns are identified
Evaluate and review schematics and drawings and provide H&S input during product development/early design and phased reviews with design and construction partners
Complete preliminary design risk assessments from desk-based review during the Engineering Validation/Testing phase of design
Validate equipment functionality and employee/vendor against preliminary risk assessment and update as necessary
Evaluate equipment and activities in the field against the risk assessment, SOPs and MOPs
Provide technical support including input into product development at the Design for Safety Innovation lab and Hardware Engineeering and Design Engineering Labs in Seattle
Independently provide technical guidance on equipment/product design, machine and electrical safety related issues
Provide advice to support business objectives with due consideration to safe design, electrical code compliance, occupational health and safety regulations, and industry best practices.
Follow up on significant incident investigations and complete internal and external incident investigation reports as needed.
