DESCRIPTION

Help shape the future of national security computing as a Senior Cloud Engineer at AWS.

The AWS Cross Domain Operations team is seeking a cleared Senior Cloud Engineer to support essential cross domain services for U.S. Intelligence and Defense customers. Our team maintains and operates the critical AWS infrastructure that enables secure cloud capabilities across classified environments. Your expertise will directly impact national security by ensuring the reliable operation of systems that government agencies depend on every day.

As a Senior Cloud Engineer on our team, you'll be instrumental in managing operational excellence for our always-on cross domain systems. You'll implement and maintain robust processes that drive our availability metrics up and our latency metrics down. We need your operational expertise to ensure our infrastructure is ready to scale for future demands, and your problem-solving skills to streamline processes and improve our response times. If you're passionate about operational excellence and want to apply your skills to support critical national security missions, we want to talk to you.

This position requires that the candidate selected be a US Citizen and must currently possess and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph. The position further requires the candidate to opt into a commensurate clearance for each government agency for which they perform AWS work.

Key job responsibilities
As a Senior Cloud Engineer on our Cross Domain Operations team, you will:

- Lead operational excellence initiatives for mission-critical systems, focusing on availability, resiliency, and security
- Diagnose and resolve complex system issues across the full technology stack in high-pressure situations
- Drive continuous improvement of operational processes, including automation of manual tasks and implementation of scaling solutions
- Conduct thorough post-incident analysis and implement preventive measures to avoid issue recurrence
- Partner with development teams to influence system design and architecture decisions that impact operational stability
- Perform technical deep-dives into service design, operating systems, networking, storage, monitoring, and capacity planning
- Lead cross-functional initiatives to improve system reliability and operational efficiency
- Mentor team members on operational best practices and resilience engineering principles
You will operate with significant autonomy, making critical decisions that affect system reliability and performance. We're seeking someone who thinks strategically about scaling solutions and consistently asks, "How can this work without manual intervention?"

Success in this role requires strong troubleshooting skills, a calm approach to incident management, and the ability to balance tactical operational needs with strategic improvements. You'll need to maintain high standards for security and operational excellence while working effectively with various stakeholders, including development teams, operational teams, and customers.

A day in the life
Your typical day begins with your team's daily stand-up, where you and your colleagues review operational priorities and ensure critical tasks are on track to meet SLAs. As a senior member of the team, you'll often provide technical guidance to help unblock issues or suggest more efficient approaches to problems.

Throughout the day, you'll balance several key activities:

- Leading operational reviews and post-incident analyses
- Collaborating with customer leads to understand their needs
- Mentoring team members on complex technical challenges
- Participating in design reviews with partner development teams
- Conducting technical deep-dives into system components
As part of our 24/7 on-call rotation, you'll be ready to respond to critical issues affecting our national security customers. During these situations, you'll either directly resolve the issue or guide other engineers through resolution, always focusing on both immediate fixes and long-term prevention.

Weekly operational reviews, which you'll sometimes lead, provide opportunities to drive continuous improvement in our processes and systems. You'll leverage your operational expertise to advocate for high-value investments that balance both immediate needs and strategic goals.

Throughout all these activities, you'll operate with significant autonomy while ensuring our team maintains the highest standards of operational excellence for our critical infrastructure.
