From human evaluations to Responsible AI safeguards to Retrieval-Augmented Generation and beyond, we are building exciting Alexa experiences leveraging Generative AI.
As an Applied Science Manager at Amazon, you will lead a team of scientists in the invention, design, development, and deployment of services that impact millions of users each day. In this role, you will use your management, research and production experience to develop the team, communicate direction and achieve the results in a fast-paced environment. You will have significant influence on our overall LLM strategy by helping define product features, drive the system architecture, and spearhead the best practices that enable a quality product.
You will collaborate with fellow applied scientists, data scientists, language engineers, as well as stakeholders in science, engineering, and product teams to understand the role data plays in developing data sets and exemplars that meet customer needs. You will lead a team that focusses on applying state-of-the-art Generative AI techniques to analyze how well our data represents human language and run experiments to gauge downstream interactions.
Key job responsibilities
• Conducting and coordinating research leading to improved Alexa AI systems.
• Owning the strategic planning and project management for technical initiatives.
• Providing technical and scientific guidance to your team members.
• Communicating effectively with senior management as well as with colleagues from science, engineering and business backgrounds.
• Supporting the career development of your team members.
- 3+ years of scientists or machine learning engineers management experience
- Knowledge of ML, NLP, Information Retrieval and Analytics
- PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field, or Master's degree
- 5+ years of building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.
- Ability to translate informal customer requirements into problem definitions, dealing with ambiguity and competing objectives.
- Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application
- Voice assistants experience
- Working with LLMs
- Research experience on LLMs and foundation models
- Proven achievements of developing and managing a long-term research vision and portfolio of research initiatives, with algorithms and models that have been successfully integrated in production systems.
- PhD with specialization in AI, speech, natural language processing, or machine learning.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $165,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $286,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
