Software Engineering
Tokyo, Japan
At IBM Infrastructure & Technology, we design and operate the systems that keep the world running. From high-resiliency mainframes and hybrid cloud platforms to networking, automation, and site reliability. Our teams ensure the performance, security, and scalability that clients and industries depend on every day. Working in Infrastructure & Technology means tackling complex challenges with curiosity and collaboration. You’ll work with diverse technologies and colleagues worldwide to deliver resilient, future-ready solutions that power innovation. With continuous learning, career growth, and a supportive culture, IBM provides the opportunities to build expertise and shape the infrastructure that drives progress.
This is a Japanese-speaking role located in Japan. For job details, please see the Japanese description below.
As a Software Engineer on our tape drive development team, you will contribute to the design and development of firmware (microcode) for next‑generation tape storage systems.
Tape storage is a key technology supporting large-scale data archiving with high capacity, reliability, and cost efficiency. It is widely used by enterprises and cloud providers for long-term data retention, including AI datasets, financial records, and backup storage. While sometimes perceived as a legacy technology, tape has become increasingly important in the era of AI and big data due to its excellent cost efficiency, scalability, and low power consumption.
In addition, tape storage is gaining strong attention from a security perspective. Because it enables physical isolation (air-gap), it provides robust protection against cyber threats such as ransomware, making it a critical component of modern data protection strategies.
You will work in a global environment and collaborate with international teams to deliver high-quality storage solutions.
* Design, develop, and maintain microcode (mainly in C) for tape drives
* Build and manage software using make-based build systems
* Create and execute test cases for firmware validation and quality assurance
* Analyze defects found during testing or from customer environments and implement fixes or workarounds
* Collaborate with global teams through technical discussions, meetings, and documentation (including possible overseas business trips)
You will have the opportunity to work on tape storage technology that has continued to evolve over decades.
If you are interested in this field and this role, we encourage you to apply.
